Each year thousands of people try to recapture their youth, spending billions of dollars on products claiming to reduce the signs of aging. With so many new products promoting their anti-aging effects, the term “cosmeceuticals” is yet another word compounding the confusion. What are cosmeceuticals? How are they different from cosmetics?
An understanding of the basics behind these products and how they work may help consumers make more informed choices on which products are right for them.
“Cosmeceuticals” are cosmetic products that claim to have pharmaceutical type benefits. Cosmeceutical products may contain bioactive ingredients including vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants, ceramides, minerals, herbs and essential oils. They are intended to enhance the health and beauty of the skin by altering its structure. These skin care products go beyond coloring and adorning the skin. They actually claim to improve the functioning of the skin, encourage collagen growth and make the skin healthier.
Cosmeceuticals may be helpful in preventing and diminishing the signs of premature aging, wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots.
These ingredients may be found in small amounts in cosmetics. Cosmeceuticals, however, contain larger percentages of these ingredients, boosting their ability to effect changes in the skin.
